Artist Miru Kim refers to French philosopher Rene Descartes

"For her latest photo series, artist Miru Kim cast herself before swine—throngs of them. The Korean–American Kim placed herself naked among hundreds of pigs to question the relationship between soul and body, human and animal.

The exhibition's title, The Pig That Therefore I Am, is a reference to French rational philosopher René Descartes famous declaration and accompanying thesis that body should be regarded as separate from the soul.

According to Kim, Descartes also “came up with the idea that animals are automata or moving machines because they are destitute of reason”, a thought she found issue with." (Read more ... )
