Who qualifies for the rapture?

The Rapture is Right in My Own Backyard, or . . . - Bethwood, CT Patch:

"The Rapture is scheduled for Saturday of this week and I just can’t seem to get excited about it. For one thing, it’s been on the calendar many times in the past, but for one reason or another, it keeps getting pushed back. For another thing, I’ve been told I don’t qualify. By my son."

... Apparently, there are legitimate groups that specialize in post-rapture pet care, since according to most fundamentalist Christian beliefs animals don’t have souls and won’t be taken up with them. This leaves a dilemma for the faithful who will be leaving behind their beloved pets. (Read more at ...)

Voices of Faith

Located in Kansas City, Kansas, is the Metropolitan Baptist Church --- led by the Reverend Baynham --- who discusses the values of animals to man. One of the more interesting articles I have read on the souls of animals, it is well worth the read.
"The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan.: Is this question about animals having souls, or is it about what will happen to our wonderful and loyal pets when this life as we know it, is ended? Our desire is to be able to see our pets that have been good to us here enjoy the same benefits in the afterlife. The Bible has registered on many occasions the value of animals to man.
While I understand this powerful association with pets and while we are created and live in this environment, we are different. We understand that all animals are not the same in their behavior and other aspects. Their main role in the world is to provide for mans survival and companionship." (Read more ... )

Shannon Hill on "Do Dogs Have Souls"

It's best to have the opinion of someone considered either an expert or has hands-on experience to be qualified in answering a question. It's better to have both. Shannon L. Hill Shannon Hill is a writer and speaker who specializes in animal welfare, immigration issues, effective cross-cultural communication, and education. She also sponsors a student club whose dual purpose is to raise money to help local animal welfare groups and to teach students about issues affecting the wellbeing of domestic animals. In her article, "Do Dogs Have Souls," she says"

"I am always blown away by the number of “religious authorities” and followers thereof who insist that only humans have souls.  To which I can only reply that anyone so foolish and egocentric as to actually believe that dogs don’t have souls has never spent any real quality time with one.  If anything, dogs have far purer souls than humans.

It was once believed that “dumb animals” did not have the capacity for emotion.  Yet anyone who has ever loved a dog knows that a dog feels joy, sadness, pain, anxiety, loneliness, anger.  In fact, veterinarians accept these emotions in pets so readily and completely that there is now a wide variety of anti-anxiety medications available for dogs.  Some of them are literally human medications re-applied to the veterinary market." My soul animal - a role playing game

My Soul Animal - RolePlayGateway:

"One day, the ruler of the world commanded for every animal on the world to be killed. So the hunt for the animals began. Once one of the animals figured out about what the humans were planning, it went to tell the rest of the animals. A lot of the animals had already been killed, and they were all running out of time, so they did something that they would never be able to undo.

The remaining animals all came together, and all their souls left their bodies. Once the souls had left their bodies, there was no more living animals on earth. The souls roamed the earth for centuries, waiting for something...." (Read more at ... )

The spirits and souls of animals and rocks

The Life Force in Animals—and in Rocks - Science and Religion Today

Artist: Nancy L. Houser / copyright 2011
From Barbara King of the Friday Animal Blog:
It’s been an axiom of my thinking and my writing that humans’ relating with animals differs in some essential way from our relating with all other parts of the universe. Ancient redwood trees, high-stalked sunflowers, bones-of-the-earth red-rock formations may all compel, for me, a gasp of admiration, a whisper of delight, an urge to stop time with a photograph.
As an anthropologist, I know something about animism, the idea that all sorts of objects in the world, even rocks, may have spirits and souls. I’ve enjoyed the writing of geologists who describe the dynamic thrusts of our earth in terms of fierce endearment. And once at a visitor center in the Grand Canyon, I touched the Vishnu schist, a rock that’s almost 2 billion years old. As decidedly cool as that was, the life force for me that day stopped at my fingertips, as my flesh met the flat rock.

The most expensive dog in the world

Tibetan Mastiff : Most Expensive Dog In The World | Long Island Press by Jessica Sinclair, March 16, 2011

A red Tibetan mastiff has become the most expensive dog in the world after it was sold for a record $1,519,843.50.

Credit: istockphoto/Anna Kucherova
The dog named Hong Dong, was purchased by a coal baron in China. The Tibetan mastiff dog has become quite the status symbol in China where it is thought to be a blessing to the owners. The dogs are thought to be reincarnated souls of monks who were not good enough to be reincarnated as humans or into heaven.

The red Tibetan mastiff is thought to be a very rare breed. It is a highly intelligent, independent, strong willed and highly protective. The history of the red Tibetan mastiff , known as the guardian dog of Tibet, is known only through legends of the people of the high Himalayan Mountains and the plains of Central Asia. It was the chosen dogs for many religious leaders.

Today, other than their vital role in the Chinese social ladder, in the Himalayan regions, the Tibetan Mastiff dogs are used as livestock guardians and are known to travel with the Tibetan sheepherders and traders. They are an important source of protection for the people of the Himalayan regions as well.

Are there souls in plants and animals?

"In the 1930’s humans poor agricultural practices and years of sustained drought caused the earth to protest and thus the Dust Bowl was formed. Removing the natural prairie grasses and existing plants proved to be a deadly mistake.
Researchers from the Department of Horticulture at Kansas State University using 2 control groups found that “post surgery patients with plants in their rooms had significantly fewer intakes of pain medication, more positive physiological responses such as (lower blood pressure and heart rate), less pain, anxiety, and fatigue, and better overall positive and higher satisfaction with their recovery rooms than their counterparts in the control group without plants in their rooms."

Join the debate on "Animals don't have souls!"

Debate on "Animals don't have souls"
PRO (for)
The Instigator
.
Zatheartstreet--- As this is my first debate, I want to let my opponent know that I might do spelling mistakes because English is not my first language.  Why I doubt animals don't have souls?
.
-If they had souls there would be no difference between them and us.
-If they had souls they would have consciousness about what love is.
-Love is something we use when referring to other people.
-Because of love you feel an intimate connection between you and others.
-Because of love you marry people, which you don't do with animals.
-If animals had souls they would speak.
-If they had souls they would use their strength (ex. lions, gorillas, leopards and other strong offensive, hunter species) to defeat us in need of space, food, weapons other things necessary to be a dominant species. In other words, we wouldn't be able to keep them in cages and have them under control which we can at the moment whenever we want.
-If you look at the Bible(advised for everyone not just for religious ones)you will find that God said during Genesis that people should rule over animals and every created life form on Earth that is not human.
______________________________________________
Con (against)
Your argument is that animals do not have souls. If we could get a few things cleared up before the start of the debate that would be great. Your definition of soul. As you have not provided one I will. Soul- the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part.
.
My argument will be that if humans were born with souls which are not detectable by any scientific instrument then the same principle would rightfully apply to animals. That is, if they had a soul it would be impossible to detect. Therefore it is impossible to disprove.

Do Animals Have Souls?

The Veterinary Viewer Viewpoint - Do Animals Have Souls?: by Vet Medicine, Stacy Mantle

"I was talking with a coworker the other day and he informed me that animals do not have emotions. This is just after he told me (the day that I put my dog of 17-yrs down) that animals do not have souls and therefore will never enjoy the concept of heaven. Now, this coworker has the disadvantage of being, what I refer to, as a 'bible-thumper.' He is, in fact, a born-again Christian. Please bear in mind that I have nothing against Christians, nor do I have anything against religion in general. I do, however, have a problem with this coworker passing along faulty information.

Let me tell you what I have seen. I have seen my own cats sleep next to me so they may keep me a little warmer while I was ill. I've seen my dogs play games with me just to force a smile to my face. I have seen a cat rush into a burning home not once, not twice, but six times to save her kittens, nearly losing her own life in the process. I have seen a ferret pull a frightened kitten out of a deep hole in the ground. I have seen a coyote fetch another dog so that it may get the proper medical care that it needs. I've seen a dog, who loves to jump on people, avoid jumping on me when I injured my back. I've seen elephants cry. I've seen monkeys scream in empathy when one of their own were injured. I've seen puppies whine all night long when they were separated from their mothers. I've seen a dog pull a child away from a fire." (Read more ... )

Francis Click and the soul

Dr. Francis Click was born in 1916, a man that will go down in history as winning a 1982 Nobel Peace Prize for the discovery of the human DNA along with James Watson. Additionally, he was the first man to scientifically study the existence of the soul in his "Scientific Search for the Soul." According to Click's calculations, he discovered the probability of proteins by forming by random collisions of atoms in the primordial ooze. Crick found it so remotely improbable that proteins and other building blocks of life could form by chance on earth that he decided that some other life form must have brought them to earth -- referred to as the “Guided Panspermia Theory.”

Panspermia is the hypothesis that life form exists throughout the Universe, distributed among all habitable planetary bodies. It is a difficult theory to scientifically prove, even with the latest in scientific technology. Numerous case studies of Dr. Michael Newton, Ph.D. in his book "Journey of the Souls" reported that souls from Earth continuously intermingled with souls from other planetary bodies in states of super-consciousness. "The superconscious may not be a level at all, but the soul itself. The superconscious mind represents our highest center of wisdom and perspective ... ". (Journey of Souls, pg 3-4)

The dumb neuron
Let your soul start a new journey through
a strange new land. Leave all thoughts of the
world you knew before ... (Credit: istockphoto/

The power of the soul is in the emergent behavior of the neurons, according to Dr. Francis Crick. "An individual neuron is in fact rather dumb. It is the intricate interaction of many of them together that can do such marvelous things. ...while the whole may not be the simple sum of the separate parts, its behavior can, at least in principle, be understood from the nature and behavior of its parts plus the knowledge of how all these parts interact." (The Astonishing Hypothesis, para.2)

Crick's controversial message in
The Astonish Hypothesis, "You, your joys and your sorrows, your memories and your ambitions, your sense of personal identity and free will, are in fact no more than the behaviour of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules," has caused controversy among scientists and researchers..

If this is the case, any body that has neurons has a soul ... or any physical life form that has a brain. The soul has a mind, the body has a brain, according to Dr. Micheal Newton. The brain is a blank slate, filled with dumb neurons, that are built upon since a body's conception. The soul, who has memories of all its lives and God's plan for the evolution of all life, choses when to enter that body -- before birth or afterwards -- with each life unique.

My thought
The Bible was written for man's salvation, not animals. Animals do not sin and are incapable of corruptness and evil. What evil they do is taught to them by mankind -- which brings heavy consequences to all of Earth. The sin that originated came directly through man. What the Bible does refer to is that animals are capable of dying and then released unto the Lord in Heaven. "All creatures recognize Jesus as the Savior of the world and praise God right along with redeemed men." (Rev. 5:8-13) This Bible verse is exemplified with the verse, "... the lesser creatures await Christ's return to redeem the sons of God so they, too, will be released from physical death to eternal life." (Romans 8:19)

Scientific Investigations of the Soul

Johnny Depp is well-known for his philosophy, "There are four questions of value in life... What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love." Somewhere in the middle of all of this exists the soul, linked to cultural religions and tribes with origins in pre-scientific history.

Most people do not believe in the soul's existence or wish to talk about it. Of many who do, it is a pretty black and white cut deal. Johnny Depp is one of the few to state it as an open book for all capable of caring and loving, regardless who they are. Besides ... science has no or very little validity regarding scientific investigations of the soul to prove it either way
Credit: istockphoto/ Kirsty Pargeter

The only exception to this was Dr. Francis Crick, a scientist who actively questioned whether or not during our biological evolution did the very first organism on Earth have a soul. He wrote a book about it called "Astonishing Hypothesis: The Scientific Search for the Soul." Dr. Crick was also the first to receive a Nobel Prize in 1962 for discovering the human DNA.

The animal spirit
"The debates which have surrounded the animal soul or mind have been sensitive indicators of a number of fundamental issues in modern philosophy and science: the immateriality of the human mind, the immortality of the soul, the existence of other minds, and the basis of free will and responsibility." (Robert Young)
According to Robert Young, debates questioning the existence of the animal soul or mind originated because of the dissatisfaction with science regarding biological and psychological phenomena. This has caused modern man to re-question the metaphysical foundations of modern science. Up until the 17th century, issues with the acceptability of an animal's soul never existed.

The natural philosopher and writer, René Descartes, was part of an early society that felt any attribution of the mind to animals was a threat to traditional religious beliefs. The philosophy of the time was that "any psychological concept of mind was conflated with the theological concept of soul." Unfortunately, this is a strong concept of the current society and many religions. Yet King Solomon was quoted as saying, "Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that it goeth downward to the earth..." (Ecclesiastes 3:21) He says that both animal and man die in the same manner, as man and beast have "one breath" through the nostrils in the same manner. (Genesis 6:17; 7:15, 22)

Final thought
There is no doubt that man can believe in a behavior or single thought without any scientific conditions being demonstrated or proven. The existence of the soul is one of them.

Death and the immortal souls of animals and humans

I made a remark one time back that  I thought man was at the bottom of the evolution scale with animals at the top. The group I was in did not agree ... I was not the most popular person at the moment. But I was looking at the increasing violence, hatred, and fighting going on in the world at the time, disgusted with the massive mistreatment of animals and children. I wondered to myself where death fit into the scheme of life -- death and the immortal souls of animals and humans. I happened to notice a phrase in one of my books by Temple Grandin, Animals Make Us Human,  "Many people today are totally insulated from death, but every living thing eventually dies; this is the cycle of life." (pg 300) The type of television shows, movies and video games more than proves this point. Death has become an unfeeling part of life with no thought behind it -- an unreal act that means nothing more than a killing before a commercial or hitting the pause button.

On the other hand, there are people who think death is the worst thing that can happen to an animal,or even humans for that matter. Billions of dollars are spent in the healthcare field to keep people alive, even against all odds or against the ill person's wishes. It has become a huge economy in the United States -- pharmaceutical companies, research areas, medical universities, assistant living homes, retirement homes with medical care, cancer centers and advanced hospital systems. But in my mind the worst thing on Earth is a life filled with cruelty, abuse, neglect, hunger, pain, diseases and inhumane treatment. In this sense, death is a blessing, leaving the question of their soul's existence to those left behind.

"Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome," wrote Isaac Asimov.  The transition of the soul is an unknown field that few can truly understand until the last decade or so. Transition is always in question by mankind, well known through God.

The Bible and the soul
The use of the word "soul" in the Bible is used in many different ways. One way is for the person who died, with his soul leaving the body. Literally, it depends on who is saying it and how it is used.  For example, Moses uses the word "soul" to refer to all living and breathing people who were still alive, "All the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls." (Exodus 1:15) or when the Lord spoke to him, "Speak unto the children of Israel, saying 'If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which ought not to be done...' "(Leviticus 4:2)

Credit: istockphoto/© Lobke Peers
In this sense, the souls of animals and people refer to those who are still breathing and very much an active part of Earth. Regarding human souls, Dr. Michael Newton, Ph.D., says that "it is possible to see into the spirit world through the mind's eye of subjects who are in a hypnotized or superconscious state; and that clients in this altered state were able to tell him what their soul was doing between lives on Earth." (GaiaSouls.com)

What is interesting is that he says there are human souls "who are so severely damaged they are detached from the mainstream of souls going back to a spiritual home base after death." Thank goodness, he found this to be a small number. But the soul who leaves a body returns to a higher power ... the essence of all living matter. It returns to a highly organized source that is directed by God and those who sit beside him. There is a master plan going on here on Earth, with people only guessing what it is -- at least until they return to their source.

The soul
The difference between a human and animal soul may be literal, but the perception depends on who is doing the believing or not believing. If you believe in God, the souls of all life, and life after death....believing in an animal soul should not be too difficult or the hereafter. The truth is, mankind has always found or manufactured support for their personal beliefs, regardless whether it is true or not. God's truth never changes. It stays the same. However, man's truth is based on perceptions that changes with his spiritual growth. This causes his truth to change throughout his life. It is true to him, but may or may not be true to God's words or part of God's plan. The Bible is the source for its existence and is a living entity. God's words are holy and speaks a never-changing truth, as he is the true source of all.

35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. (1 Corinthians 15:35-40)

A kernel of wheat is a kernel of wheat, a kernel of grain is a kernel of grain ... just because it grows in many forms does not mean it does not come from the source. By looking at the soul in all living things, it is as a kernel of grain.  "Nephesh" is translated as "soul" or"life" in biblical Hebrew's Old Testament -- the source of all life -- regardless of the form it takes.

One example is the existence of blood, as blood relates to the soul and life -- and is in the bodies of all living things, not just humans. It is the interpretation of the Bible that gives it meaning.  Dr. Joel M. Hoffman wrote a book called "And God Said: How Translations Conceal the Bible's Original Meaning." If you read the Bible, this is a necessary accompaniment for all the wrong translations in the Bible since the original Hebrew Bible. Human beings and animals are described as having the tangible aspect of life called "nephesh." Immortal souls of animals and humans will live forever, as the soul never dies. Only the body does.

My thought
What is immortality and eternal life? How does it affect the existence of the soul?

The controversial existence of animal souls

"He who harbors angels and reveres animals lives with goodness and God."

Many online articles deny the existence of souls in animals, much more than support it, in fact. Granted, it is an extremely controversial subject. But let us remember that in the early 20th century there was also denial on the existence of physical and sexual abuse of children. (Child Sexual Abuse) Today, statistics show that one child is sexually abused every 90 seconds and five sexually abused children die every day. (ChildHelp) But the souls of animals? Well ... that is a split audience.

In 1995 and 1999, the writings of Vasu Murti (All-Creatures) addressed this subject in Chapter 8: Animals Have Souls:

"One widespread rationalization in Christian circles, often used to justify humanity’s mistreatment of animals, is the erroneous belief that humans alone possess immortal souls, and only humans, therefore, are worthy of moral consideration."

"I feel that there is an angel inside me
whom I am constantly shocking."

The controversy regarding the soul's existence
This is a controversial statement, as the issue of souls in mankind has its roots in the Bible and early Christianity. But as many animal organizations will testify, the mistreatment of animals has always been a global problem ... widespread among numerous cultures, all levels of society. It is definitely not a one-size fits all problem.

The writings of Vasu Murti also state that in the verses of Genesis 1: 21, 24, the exact Hebrew meaning is 'nephesh chayah', which accurately means 'living soul.' But when the Bible was translated into other languages, this meaning became lost, mistranslated as 'living creatures.'

Another Bible verse, Genesis 1:30 ... if it were read in the original Hebrew, would say, "And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is a living soul, I have given every green herb for meat."

Translation of the Bible
When the Bible was translated from Hebrew, all beasts, fowl and animals were omitted as having a living soul when it went to other languages. The way it reads now, only man has the right to have a soul. However, the original Bible verses state that animals are as important to God as humans are.  The Bible reads as if written by God, and he should know what he wrote...best explained in Psalm 104.

Mark Twain once said that human beings have a lot to learn from the Higher Animals. Just because they haven’t invented static cling, ICBM’s, or television evangelists doesn’t mean they aren’t spiritually evolved. (Mark Twain) Now science is finding that most animals have an intelligence of the Higher Animals. Even rats have been found to refuse to bring home food if it hurts any of their group or an elephant can grieve and cry. (Morals

My thoughts
Science is just now finding out that animals are capable of thinking, processing thoughts, feeling emotions and have similar diseases and DNAs. Yet. ... they have always had this capability. So who is the superior race?
